Spirits of the Rocks: Ceramics Specializing in handcrafted ceramics and art by Leah Simmons DeCapio and Scott DeCapio |
|
The clay is first thrown on a potter's wheel by Scott or shaped by hand from a slab. The piece is then painted black with an engobe. From here, Leah carves the designs into the clay. This carving process is called sgraffito. It is similar to the processes used in wood cuts. Each piece is an original, no stencils are used! Because each piece is one-of-a-kind, they are individually priced depending on intricacy, size, and adornments (in the cases of the Wish Pots, Heart Songs, DooDas, etc). Please contact us for more specific pricing of the pieces you are interested in. With each "section" (Mugs, Bowls, etc) is a price range.

"...handmade pottery provides a person-to-person intimacy. The hand of the artist reaches through the object to touch the hand of the user, creating a bond of friendship, caring, and aesthetic gratification that nurtures human life..." -Wayne Higby
